The Power of the Word
Remember that no study
method supersedes the power of God’s Word.
It is a guide for life, not a speech to be remembered. The best study skills will be wasted if the
students don’t hide what they’ve studied in their hearts.
Bible-Quizzing
Rules
AIM
General Rules:
1.
Bible-Quizzing
is a teaching resource ministry of Youthline Ministries.
2.
The
purpose of Bible-Quizzing is to help other ministries to equip youth in Bible
memory and knowledge.
3.
AIM’s
aim is to focus on the ministry needs of Native American youth, but will not
discriminate against youth from any other ethnic group that would choose to
participate.
4.
Quizzers
must not be over the age of twenty, as long as they have not been to college or
technical school.
5.
Switching
of teams by individuals will be permitted between rallies, but not between
quizzes on the day of a rally. Their
points scored for a team stays with that team for their yearly totals, but the
individual gets to include any points he earns for whatever team in his/her
yearly individual totals.
6.
A
team to be entered in any of the five rallies must submit notification by
phone, mail, or electronic mail by the Thursday before the rally. NOTICE – Teams not coming to a certain rally
would still help the Quiz-Director by contacting him/her concerning their
non-attendance.
7.
Rosters
not turned in on time may cost the team a forfeiture for one or all of the
quizzes for that day, based on the Quiz-Master’s decision.
8.
Tardy
teams on the day of rallies may also have to forfeit one or more quizzers if
the Quiz-Master so decides.
9.
Travel
expenses and liability to or from each quizzing event is to be understood to be
the responsibility of each individual team and sending group before they agree
to participate. CNY and the host
organizations are not responsible for injuries or losses during the rallies, or
during travel to or from any quiz related event.
10.
Host
organizations at each rally should be ready to do each of the following:
a.
have
three or more rooms able to be set up for quizzes
b.
have
a separate room big enough to have a meeting room when others are not quizzing
c.
put
up signs and maps as needed, inside or outside to help visitors. Indicate the following: quiz rooms, restrooms, meeting areas, eating
areas, et cetera.
d.
Each
team will be responsible for their own meals on the day of the rally. Suggest eating on the way there and
afterwards with a snack packed during the day.
e.
clean
up also the responsibility of the host group
11.
The
awards banquet at the season’s end is a dessert social by all groups in
attendance. CNY shall work out who will
host the banquet, and other details.
12.
Any
church, mission, group, school, et cetera is permitted, or if necessary to have
enough for a team, a combination of the above.
Let the Quiz-Director know your team’s name, groups represented, and
coaches name and how to contact them.
NOTE: Teams and anyone else connected with AIM
Bible-Quizzing must understand that AIM and it’s ministries, including quizzing
is evangelical and will adhere to the AIM Statement of Faith, which can be
obtained by the AIM office by Roger Scarbro.
ALL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS AT QUIZ-RALLIES WILL BE FROM SCRIPTURE ALONE,
AND NOT FROM SOMEONE’S SPECIFIC DOCTRINAL SLANT.
Competition
Rules:
1.
Each
team must seat at least three (3) individuals in each quiz to begin with, and
no more than five (5) seated at a time.
Any number of substitutes may be used, see Rule 31 for more details.
2.
Each
quiz will include twenty (20) “jump” questions.
3.
A
four-way final will be held for the top 4 scoring teams at the end of each
rally. The trophy for first, second,
third, and fourth place teams will be given based upon the outcome of the
final.
NOTE *Points will NOT be used
for end-of-year results. May be
replaced by a 3-way final.
4.
Four-way
finals will operate the same way with four teams as regular quizzes with the
following exception: In the finals, if
an error is made by team “A”, then the other three teams will have a bonus
question. One team will remain silent,
while the other teams will answer to the judges. At the end of 30 seconds, the first team will be called upon to
answer, then the judges will be asked the response of the other teams’
answer. All correct answers will be awarded
ten points. The teams that whisper
their answer to the judges will alternate with each bonus question.
5.
If
a tie takes place at the end of regular quizzing that effects the outcome of
who goes to the 4-way final, a tie-breaker will take place. That will consist of the two or more teams
that are tied being asked five (5) questions that are twenty points each if
correct and ten points for any bonus questions. If the teams are still tied, the same process will continue,
until the tie is broken. The same
process will be used in the four-way final if a tie occurs, to determine the
overall daily winner.
6.
In
regular quizzes and in 4-way finals, errors will be deducted ten points
starting on question fifteen (15) and continuing to question nineteen (19).
7.
The
twentieth question in all quizzes (4-way final included) will count double, either
for or against. Meaning, if answered
correctly, the question will score forty points, but if answered incorrectly,
the deduction will be twenty points.
8.
An
individual that gets five questions correct without an error in any ONE quiz
will receive a bonus of twenty points for his team, and will go on both the
team and individual overall point totals (but if in a 4-way final, will count
for that day only).
9.
A
team that has five separate quizzers answer at least one 20-point question in
the same quiz, that team will receive a bonus of 20 points on their team total
for that quiz, and will be added in to their daily and yearly totals.
10.
BONUS
QUESTIONS: If a question is missed,
then a bonus question is then asked to the quizzer sitting in the same seat
position on the opposing team. That
person shall stand and have thirty seconds to answer after the question is
completed.
11.
Failure
to answer a bonus question is to be scored as an attempt, and not as an error.
12.
EACH
QUESTION MAY ONLY BE READ ONCE.
13.
A
complete answer must be given within 30 seconds from the time of recognition as
being first to jump by the jump judge, and the Quiz-Master asking you to give
your answer. The 30 seconds will start
at that point, even if a microphone is used and the quizzer has to walk to it.
14.
If
a quizzer leaves his chair before the question is completed, that quizzer must
finish the question (correctly, but not necessarily word-perfect) that the
Quiz-Master was about to ask. Thirty
seconds to answer the question will also include finishing the question that
was left incomplete. If unable, an
error is given.
15.
An
error is counted if a quizzer fails to adequately answer the question asked.
16.
An
error is counted if a quizzer starts to jump and his light goes off first, but
sits or falls back down for any reason.
17.
An
error is counted when a quizzer starts to jump after the word ‘Question’, but
not even one word of the question has been asked yet.
18.
If
no quizzer jumps within 15 seconds after the Quiz-Master has completed the
question, “TIME” will be called. The
quiz then goes on with the next question in the sequence of 20, counting the
unanswered question as zero for both teams.
19.
The
decision on the correctness or incorrectness of a question will be made by the
Quiz-Master. He will decide if enough
elements of the answer are there to make it correct, and may consult with the
judges or look at Scripture before ruling if he desires. Team captains should contest if they feel
the answer was called out correct or incorrect wrongly.
20.
QUIZ-OUTS
and ERROR-OUTS: Any quizzer answering
five 20-point questions correctly or making three errors will be replaced by a
substitute. This quizzer who is out is
ineligible to return to the quizzing platform for that quiz, for any
reason. EXCEPTION: If there is no substitute for a quizzer who
quizzes out or errors out, the ineligible quizzer may stay in his seat to
answer bonus questions only and may not be allowed to jump. His electric lights will be turned off to
avoid light errors.
21.
An
answer is CORRECT when:
a.
It
contains the main information requested.
b.
If
“Quote this verse…” is word-for-word as found in the New International Version
of the Bible and the correct reference is given if asked for.
c.
If
correct names that are asked for are given but mispronounced.
d.
If
the information in answer is correct within the thirty second time limit.
*An answer is INCORRECT when:
a.
If
given information in answer is incomplete in main elements (main details
needed, but not necessarily word perfect).
b.
If
the information given in the answer is totally wrong.
c.
If
the time limit elapses before the answer is given (if main elements were
already given before time expired, the Quiz-Master may call the answer correct
at his discretion).
d.
If
any word is left out, or added, in a “Finish the verse…” question or the
reference is wrong if asked for. If
reference is correct but not word perfect, the quizzer will get 10 points and
counts as a bonus and not as an error or correct answer. Same if word perfect but the reference is
incorrect. A quizzer has the whole 30
seconds allowed to back up and correct themselves on a “Finish the verse”
question only. If the reference to a
verse is incorrect, the quizzer has only two more opportunities to state the
correct reference.
e.
If
any reference to Deity are incorrect.
Must be the proper person of the Trinity.
22.
Quizzers
must keep their hands and feet off the seat during a question or be in risk of
being called for an error.
23.
Quizzers,
coaches, fans, et cetera may not speak or give any evident clues after the
Quiz-Master begins his question. A team
can be charged for a foul if it is his/her people, it shall be the Quiz-Masters
discretion, usually there will be one warning per team.
24.
Each
team must pick a captain and co-captain.
If the captain must leave the quiz platform for any reason, the
co-captain must replace them when it comes to captain’s responsibilities so
there is always a captain on the platform.
25.
Teams
are to be seated, facing the audience during a quiz.
26.
Any
quizzer or coach who displays actions which are not conducive to sound
Christian standards can be eliminated by the Quiz-Master from the present or
next quiz and is up to the Quiz-Directors discretion if they return to quiz
that day. Repeats could cause them to
be kept out for longer periods.
27.
A
quizzer is asked to come to full stature after beginning their jump and until
recognized. WAIT UNTIL RECOGNIZED.
28.
Only
captains (or co-captains taking their place) and coaches may call a time-out.
29.
Each
team is allowed to call a maximum of 3 time-outs per quiz. They will be given 60 seconds each. Time-outs by officials will not be regular
time-outs.
30.
Only
ONE time-out will be allowed between each question.
31.
A
substitution is classified when:
a.
A
coach calls time-out for a substitution.
b.
The
substitute moves straight to the quizzing platform and declares the seat he is
taking. The scorekeeper makes the
change on the scorekeeping sheet. The
quizzer substituted for must leave the quizzing platform immediately.
c.
A
60-second time-out is charged to the team calling for a stop to put in a
substitute. NOTE – the other team(s)
must wait until the next question to put in a substitute since the rules allow
only one time-out to be charged per question.
The team that called the time-out and is charged with it may make more
than one substitute during that particular time-out.
d.
A
quizzer substituted for may return only to his/her original seat (if he has not
quizzed or erred out) and his substitute must leave the quiz-platform when
replaced. No seat positions may be
changed during a quiz.
32.
Types
of questions include:
a.
“Finish
the verse and give the reference” questions.
The Quiz-Master will not give more than 5 words of the verse.
b.
Memory
verses: The Quiz-Master may ask for the
recitation of a particular verse.
c.
Reference
questions will ask for a chapter or verse a particular item may be found.
d.
Interrogative
questions, which will use words like “who, what, when, where, which, how, et
cetera” and may have some direct, key words in the Scripture to know.
33.
Actual
questions at quiz rallies are for Quiz-Masters, Assistant Quiz-Masters, and
Judges eyes only. Practice books may
help studying and can be purchased at your local Christian bookstore, but the
rally questions will most likely be written directly from the Bible by a
question-writer.
34.
If
there is a reason to believe the Quiz-Master has ruled incorrectly on an
answer, any quizzer present on the platform may challenge the decision.
a.
A
decision may be contested only after points are awarded and before the
Quiz-Master begins again with the word, “Question”, for the next question.
b.
Contester
may not confer with the coach, Quiz-Master, team, or anyone else before lodging
a contest, or during the contest.
c.
A
contester betters his position if Scripture references can be given in his
contest, but not always.
d.
Captain
of other team(s) will be given an opportunity to express a counter-contest
before the final decision.
e.
After
the judges’ decision, no further rebuttal is permitted.
f.
No
time-outs will be charged for a contested answer.
g.
Questions
about rules isn’t a contest, and coaches can talk to the Quiz-Master about
concerns.
35.
Answers
may be given in another translation other than NIV, such as King James, but the
quizzer must tell the Quiz-Master what version they will answer in before
answering if other than the NIV.
Basketball
Competition Rules: (Optional:
dependant upon teams, time, and assistants)
Along with accepted 3-on-3 competition rules, these
additional rules also apply…
1.
Those
who wish to participate in the basketball competition must also participate in
the quizzing.
2.
Each
team must have at most three (3) individuals in each game.
3.
Each
team MUST have one girl ‘on the floor’ at all times. A team may consist of 3 girls, 2 girls with 1 boy, or 1 girl with
2 boys. No team shall have 3 boys ‘on
the floor’ at any time during the game.
4.
Each
game will be timed, and will last twenty (20) minutes.
5.
Teams
will be rated on their win-loss record for the day. All ties will be broken before trophies are awarded
6.
End
of the year trophies will be awarded based upon each teams yearly win-loss
record.
7.
Coaches
need to record players individual scores for each competition.
8.
Trophies
will be presented at the end of the year for high-scoring players.
Memory
verse recitation rules:
v
A
maximum of 10 points per memory verse will be awarded to the team for
their daily total, and their yearly total, for reciting all memory verses for
the meet. Points will be awarded for
the correct word recitation of a verse (5 pts) and the correct reference (5
pts). Each quizzer that recites a
memory verse, without any help from their team mates or the first three
words given by the LISTENER, will receive a 20-point bonus for the
team memory section of the quiz rally.
v
Either
one quizzer on a team may recite all the memory verses, or a combined effort by
all the quizzers on the team is acceptable.
If a reciter is ‘stuck’ on a particular section of a verse, he/she may
ask for assistance from one of the other members of his/her team.
v
Each
verse may be started for the LISTENER, by reading the first three words of the
memory verse. The LISTENER will
announce, at the end of each verse, whether or not the word perfect is correct
or the reference is correct, or not. As
time permits, the reciter may go back to the word perfect to attempt to correct
any recitation mistake. The reciter has
only three chances to get the reference correct on each memory verse. The team will have 20 minutes to recite all
memory verses correctly.
v
Before
the team recites the memory verses, they must announce to the LISTENER what
translation they are using. The
LISTENER will then locate each memory verse and then ask the reciter to recite
the verse.
v
Acceptable
translations for memory work include, but are not limited to: NIV, NASB, NKJV, KJV and RSV. Paraphrased versions of the Bible are not
encouraged to learn memory verses from.
Such versions include, but are not limited to: Contemporary English Version, Amplified Bible, Living Bible, Children's
Living Bible, and the NIrV.
v
One
block of time during a quiz rally will be set aside for a team to do their
memory recitation. This block of time
will be scheduled, as if it were an individual competition. All teams will have a scheduled time to do
their memory verse recitation for a given quiz rally. If a team chooses not to attempt the recitation, please notify
the LISTENER that you will not need that time period.
